LEED Rating System & Lighting

As more and more states adopt stringent energy programs like Title 24 and ASHRAE 90.1, quality lighting design, coupled with savvy energy strategies are essential.  Horton Lees Brogden aims to design quality lighting systems to complement both interior and exterior areas while at the same time providing an integrated system that uses daylight and environmentally favorable products to produce designs that endure.  Sustainability and green architecture demand advances in building technology, and operations methods are now available to maximize the economic and environmental payback.  HLB has been an advocate for advanced control technologies and has established criteria for utilizing smart technology with high quality lighting systems that enable load shedding, task tuning, lumen maintenance and occupancy/photocell controls to enhance performance in indoor and outdoor environments.   HLB will work with your design team to establish which LEED credits are applicable and collaborate closely with the appropriate team members on light pollution issues, the reduction of energy, use of lighting controls, and optimization of daylight as required.

Now more than ever, building teams need the expertise of a knowledgeable lighting designer who can decipher new technologies that will maximize savings and preserve our environment.  A team from each of our four HLB offices is actively dedicated to Daylighting/Sustainable Design practices internally, and we remain involved in the community through various organizations including the Department of Energy, the International Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and the U.S. Green Building Council.  In addition, HLB has established a firm-wide educational program to promote LEED Accredited Professional designers and also supports on-going training which keeps our team up-to-date as energy codes and LEED programs develop and change.

Our Daylighting/Sustainable Design Studio is headed by Hayden McKay.  Ms. McKay is a leading industry expert in the field of daylighting and solar analysis and, long before it was fashionable, led the way in a movement toward environmentally sensitive architectural lighting design and energy conservation.  She leads the firm's efforts in daylighting, energy conservation and sustainable design through internal and external education, establishing professional standards, lecturing and consulting.

In recognition of design work that integrates quality lighting solutions with dramatic energy savings, HLB has received the prestigious Illuminating Engineering Society's IIDA EPRI Awards of Excellence and Merit. Our projects have also been named to the American Institute of Architect's Committee on the Environment, AIA Top 10 Green Projects List, which recognizes buildings designed to integrate architecture, technology, and natural systems.
