Uyemura Residence

Newport Beach, California

Perched on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the Uyemura Residence looks as if it is about to take flight.   The gentle sweep of the roof both lifts and embraces the living spaces within.   Working closely with the owners, the design team strove for simplicity and elegance in lighting the strong architectural forms.

Tiny uplights are set between pavers outside and are integrated into structural columns inside to create a warm glow on the ceiling. Pendant wallwashers penetrate a folding plane to light an art wall while recessed wallwashers tucked behind a beam graze the plaster wall over the fireplace.   Sparkling long-life halogen lamps with dimmers were used for energy-efficient light, to extend life and to provide flexibility and warmth.   Cabinetry in the dining room and kitchen hide indirect lighting for countertops and soffits, while carefully selected decorative fixtures bring focus and center to the rooms.

The Residence's lighting design has been recognized with an IIDA Award of Merit.
