University of Houston Recreation Center

Houston, Texas

Sports and recreation is the heart of many campus environments today. Working with Hughes Group Architects from Sterling, VA, HLB Lighting designed the lighting for the exterior, atrium lobby, multi-activity center, gymnasium, fitness loft, and natatorium.   The challenges included multi-level lighting in almost all of the spaces for user-flexibility.

A family of unique fixtures was created for the exterior of the building as a signature or identity to support the spirit of the student body. The large atrium clerestory windows were enhanced with indirect lighting to create a beacon at night.   The same concept is used in adjacent facilities to complement the suite of buildings.

The natatorium lighting system was designed for both recreation level and competition levels of lighting.   This competition level matches NCAA standards for television broadcasts.   The diving platforms were also highlighted with adjustable fixtures on a catwalk for vertical highlight.
