The University of California in San Francisco, the city's oldest public university, leads the way in the rebirth of Mission Bay. The new scientific research and teaching campus called UCSF Mission Bay begins with UCSF Building 24, named after the parcel number on the site map. This 430,000-square-foot facility operates four levels of research laboratories and offices, multi-use seminar rooms, a café, exercise room, bookstore, atrium, and a large 261-seat lecture hall.

Our lighting design services from schematic design to final completion involved all the laboratories, open offices, and public spaces - including the towering glass atrium just inside the main entry. The interior lighting scheme of the public areas stemmed from the desire to provide users with a more personal environment with points of visual interest around each corner as a mental departure from the rigorous work inside the labs.

For the labs and offices themselves, we made careful design considerations for optimum visual performance and visual comfort. Indirect/direct lighting became an important lighting concept in these areas as well as multi-level lighting controls for user flexibility.
