University of Cincinnati Recreation Center

Cincinnati, Ohio

As a key piece of the MainStreet development program designed to enhance the “quality of life” facilities at the University of Cincinnati, the Campus Recreation Center unites a myriad of elements within a state-of-the-art facility hosting a wide range of exercise and fitness offerings.  This vibrant and architecturally complex center includes a natatorium, six-court gym, a suspended four-lane 1/8-mile track, 600 person capacity café/juice bar, multi-purpose rooms, climbing wall, and classrooms.  HLB collaborated with Morphosis and KZF Design on the $113 million, 350,000 square foot, 24/7 compound which has garnered LEED Certification from the USGBC.

A system consisting of mesh panels suspended below the ceiling structure extends throughout the center creating connectivity and flow.  Metal halide downlights were placed above the panels and utilize varying luminaire types as well as wattages to account for fluctuating ceiling heights and the diversity of space usages.  Fluorescent luminaires were detailed behind the continuous translucent ribbon on the façade, accentuating its undulating form and supporting the continually morphing structure's prominence, as well as at key transition points within the facility to highlight the distinctive expression of color.
