Sherman Oaks Galleria Renovation
Sherman Oaks, California
Renovating the infamous “Valley Girl” Galleria in Sherman Oaks, California was challenging, yet the outdoor shopping center's lighting approach was simple: complement the modernist architecture while creating a comfortable and unique shopping experience.
Decorative, cut-off pole fixtures flank the main entry into the shopping complex. Building canopies were uplit with floodlights to give the building a “lighter” appearance. Linear sign lighters were used to emphasize the continuous, frosted glass canopies giving the common area a grand sense of height. Banners were highlighted with uplights, which also provided reflective light off the glass canopies. As a counterpoint to the strong linear element above, niche mounted accent lights provide rhythmic pools of light in the pedestrian zone below. The rotunda was treated with perimeter up/downlight cylinders and uplights in order to emphasize the height of the semi-open circular court. Pole mounted floodlights backlight the rotunda glass roof. Cold cathode cove lighting and downlights provide ambient and general illumination at the covered areas. A bird's eye view of the project reveals the play of light where varying brightness emphasizes retail and gathering zones. The main court is illuminated using floodlights mounted on a building parapet and a water wall feature is softly illuminated using concealed linear wall washers providing a subtle sparkling effect.
This lighting design has been recognized with an IIDA Award of Merit.
