Santana Row - Custom Fixture Design

San Jose, California

The challenge of revitalizing an aged retail strip center in San Jose, California was addressed with master planners Street-Works and developer Federal Realty Investment Trust. The result is a mixed-use facility involving the development of retail stores, an entertainment complex, and residential dwellings. This streetscape, reflecting the best of European and American town design, includes parks, plazas, unique shops as well as garden and loft apartments. Classic streetlamp poles, pendants, and wall-mounted light fixtures complement the architecture and aesthetic of the surrounding community and illuminate this pedestrian-friendly environment. Sensitively-scaled post lights, festoon lighting and pendants, softly illuminate the centrally located park that includes restaurant and retail kiosks. This creates an atmosphere of intimacy often found in old town-style environments.

The additional task of complying with the City of San Jose's stringent outdoor lighting requirements was a difficult one. Horton Lees Brogden Lighting Design developed semi-custom outdoor lighting fixtures that incorporate state of the art cut-off reflector systems. These fixtures eliminate light trespass and unwanted light pollution in response to the concerns from the nearby Lick Observatory. As a result of the efficient use of light, color corrected high-pressure sodium source is utilized in lieu of the City standard low-pressure sodium. This provides an optimal color rendering so critical for the success of a retail environment.
