Red Bull
Santa Monica, California

Red Bull is a multi-faceted company - in addition to producing the popular energy drink, they also sponsor extreme sport events and own a number of sports teams. Hence, it is fitting that their new U.S. 100,000 square foot headquarters features a “skateboarding ramp” that weaves its way throughout the entire office. This unique and creative design element begins its ride at the entry pavilion, continues centrally though the length of the office space, and at its termination - wraps up to form part of the theater space ceiling. Our collaborative work with HLW International featured the design intent of a unified solution encompassing the entire open space, thus crafting the ambiance of one large architectural volume. With this direction, our lighting design solutions called for simple fixtures creatively integrated into various architectural niches, slots, and details, rather than the utilization of prominent feature fixtures.
Flood lighting for events is incorporated into architectural niches at the top of perimeter walls in the entry pavilion. In the open office space, compact fluorescent high-bay fixtures allow for multi-level switching for varied light levels and a soft glow onto the ceiling. Sconces mounted to columns adjacent to the ramp wash light across its surface. The underside of the ramp serves as break areas and conferences rooms. This space is uplit with strip lighting located within the perimeter rock gardens as well as atop the adjacent conference rooms. Low noise fixtures and dimming control systems were developed to meet acoustical standards for the editing and lab suites. For the theater, downlights create a star-like effect adding a bit of drama to the space, while floodlights from behind the seating wash light up the back wall as well as the ceiling.
