Levi's

Portland, Oregon

The design team's goal on this project was to convert a dark Irish pub into an active, flexible retail store before the winter holiday season. The design has become a prototype for continued construction of new stores throughout the country.

From the exterior, color and bright interior lighting create a beacon to attract pedestrians. Previous lighting did not allow Levi's sufficient flexibility to quickly change store layouts and product lines without re-focusing. To increase flexibility and reduce the likelihood of poorly focused accent lighting, light levels were increased using linear fluorescent fixtures. These included a small uplight component to provide ceiling illumination to prevent a “cave effect” when compared to light levels on walls and floor. In addition, the variety of lamp types was reduced to simplify accurate relamping – a problem in existing stores. Efficiency and longer lamp life result in operational savings over the system's life.

This project has received an Illuminating Engineering Society IIDA Award of Merit.
