Germantown Aquatic Center

Germantown, Maryland

The community of Germantown has quite the indoor swimming center consisting of a competition pool, recreation pool, and leisure pool.  There is fun for all ages from a 10-meter tall diving platform tower, to two 35-foot high twisting water slides and an interactive leisure area.  The facility is nearly 60,000 square feet and was designed by Hughes Group Architects out of Sterling, VA. The center expects 600 to 800 swimmers a day.

The program required two light levels for the competition pool to facilitate recreational operation as well as competition. In addition the owner was very concerned about possible glare from fixtures and shadowed areas at the bottom of the competition pool.  HLB created a solution with a two-lamp metal halide, direct distribution, asymmetric system that took advantage of the 40-foot and 50-foot mounting heights available. In the leisure pool and recreation pool areas uniform light levels were achieved with varying mounting heights of metal halide prismatic fixtures artfully interwoven with the slides to add to the playful appearance of the space.
