Folsom & Dore Affordable Housing

San Francisco, California

This project serves households with special needs such as physical or developmental disabilities, HIV/AIDS illness, chronic unemployment, and other low income residents. The entry garden court and “green” stair provide a transitional decompression space to mitigate between the hard urban exterior environment and the new dwellings. Part of a demolished brick warehouse structure has been recycled into a storefront along the main Folsom Street frontage to provide a more prominent presence for the community meeting room, and to collage part of the history of this space into the new design.

Horton Lees Brogden's collaboration with Heller Manus included all interior and exterior lighting including community spaces, lobbies, corridors, residential units, offices, and façade lighting. Compact fluorescent lighting was selected, resulting in energy efficiency and lower electricity costs. This project is the first new building in San Francisco to receive a LEED Silver rating and has exceeded California 's Title 24 requirements by 20%.
