Science Center
Los Angeles, California
After a gala opening, the California Science Center represents a contemporary and open space with interactive exhibits and attractions for adults as well as students of all ages. Horton Lees Brogden's scope of work included lighting design for the public atrium and exhibits, two restaurants, IMAX theater, performance space, public art, meeting rooms and administrative offices. Lighting for restaurants, performance spaces and meeting rooms was designed to be versatile and controllable to address the different needs of various groups who will use these spaces for a variety of events and educational functions.
Horton Lees Brogden also designed the exterior lighting for the museum and the renovation of historic Exposition Park surrounding the project. Areas included in the lighting design services consisted of roadways, pedestrian paths, landscaped area development, and building façade lighting as well as large-scale public artwork, water features, and a park-wide system of graphics and signage. Improved light levels addressed nighttime safety concerns while more subtle lighting details created a second level to the lighting palette and highlighted the more interesting elements of the remaining historic building facade and rose garden.
