Boston Symphony Hall

Clerestory & Statuary Lighting

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston Symphony Hall has been the setting for spectacular music performances for over 100 years.  The reopening of its arched clerestory windows, shuttered since World War II, was the catalyst for the renovation project.   The introduction of daylight into the Hall for the first time in 70 years inspired the refurbishment and new lighting for the upper hall.

HLB working with Ann Beha Architects created an overall lighting design strategy for the Hall which solved a number of technical and aesthetic problems, creating a more cohesive, comfortable and celebratory experience for patrons. The newly exposed clerestory windows provided a wonderful opportunity to uplight the arches highlighting the architectural details.

Modeling and highlighting of the statues was achieved by adding three layers of light on each statue, key light, fill light, and back light, creating a feeling of depth. Minimal light fixtures using state-of-the-art technology in carefully concealed locations deliver lighting effects without drawing attention. The new lighting breathes new life into this treasured, time-honored hall.

The lighting design for this project has been awarded an IES Illumination Award of Merit.
