Bloomingdale's 59th Street 3rd Floor
New York, New York
The recently completed 3rd floor renovation at Bloomingdale's 59th Street flagship provided HLB Lighting Design the opportunity to collaborate with design architect Mancini Duffy and Bloomingdale's Store Design on reinventing the retailer's lighting approach.
To create a bold visual statement upon arrival to the floor, HLB Lighting worked closely with Mancini Duffy to design a 150 foot long luminous ceiling adjacent to the escalator with warm, flattering lighting filtered through a stretched PVC membrane. The dramatic main aisles and their open sight lines were articulated with recessed linear pockets containing adjustable accent lights to highlight visual points along these routes. Ambient light levels were lowered from existing Bloomingdale's standards while accent lighting levels were raised along aisles and at visual points to increase the sense of drama and bring the product into the foreground. In perimeter sales areas, thin recessed linear fluorescent downlights produce a soft ambient glow from a clean, ordered ceiling design, and color corrected metal halide wall washers and accent lights paint the entire floor's perimeter displays with a crisp, dramatic layer of lighting.
