J. David Gladstone Institute

San Francisco, California

The J. David Gladstone Institute is a 190,000 square foot research facility with labs, offices, video conferencing and multiuse spaces.  HLB designed both the interior and exterior lighting and worked with the architectural firm NBBJ.   To enhance the building's evening identity as one of the many landmarks in San Francisco's Mission Bay Campus and to save energy, a small percentage of lighting was relied upon for exterior lighting.  We developed simple, aesthetic and practical solutions within budget and more than 5% below Title24.   We used minimal lamp types with various light levels and environmental criteria throughout all laboratories, offices, conference areas and public spaces, to simplify maintenance.  In the lobby, stone walls received patterned washes of accent lighting while wood surfaces received linear grazing washes of light.  Multi-lamp MR16 fixtures, on dimmers to extend lamp life, provide downlighting and focusable art lighting.

The result is a well-designed, energy efficient, maintenance friendly facility that exceeds expectations.

The lighting design for this project has been recognized with an IIDA Golden Gate Section award.
