Berkeley City College

Berkeley, California

The students and faculty of Berkeley City College now have an impressive new home to call their own.  The $46 million 165,000 square foot building brings together a campus community that was previously scattered throughout the city of Berkeley.

HLB assisted the architect with lighting their urban infill glass curtain wall building, which features an impressive six-story atrium for natural light and social interaction. The space includes a large natural skylight to take advantage of the local California sunshine. Our scope included the atrium, classrooms, labs, library, conference rooms and the public areas.

Sustainability is a main feature of the building, which has been awarded a LEED Silver designation.   The building is over 40% more energy efficient than similar buildings of its type.  Energy efficient fluorescent sources with high CRI ratings were predominantly used throughout the facility while ceramic metal halide sources provided the accent lighting in many of the large spaces. Shields for fixtures were installed to reduce night-sky light pollution.  Materials and finishes with high recycled content were chosen for their Earth friendly nature.
