HLB San Francisco:  Human Resources Manager

Horton Lees Brogden Lighting (HLB Lighting), a forward-thinking, award-winning architectural lighting design firm, seeks a Human Resources Manager for their San Francisco, CA office to lead the HR function for the business.  The HR Manager will report to the Chief Operating Officer in New York and the Senior Principal in San Francisco, and will support these two offices as well as the Los Angeles and Boston sites.  HLB Lighting has plans to expand geographically and to grow its 50 employee team to over 75 employees in the near future.

HLB Lighting has been actively involved for forty years in the creative design of innovative lighting systems for commercial architectural applications such as office buildings, education complexes, health science buildings, historic sites, transportation terminals, as well as hospitality, performing arts, religious assembly, retail and sports venues.  HLB Lighting is an award-winning design firm, having won the Lumen West Firm of the Year in 2007 from the Illuminating Engineering Society, as well as many other awards and recognition from prestigious organizations such as the US Department of Transportation.

As the first HR Manager for the company, the successful candidate will establish HR systems, processes and practices that are best-practice, legally compliant and align with the business strategy.  HR Manager is responsible for coordinating a wide range of human resource functions for the company including HR policies and procedures, Compensation, Benefits, HRIS, Recruitment and Selection, Training and Development, Company Culture, Performance Management, Organization Development, Employee Relations, HR Legal Compliance, AAP/Equal Employment Opportunity, and Safety/Workers Compensation.

You can become a part of our exciting company if you have:

 

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent; a PHR or SPHR is highly preferred, as is an advanced degree
  • Eight to ten years experience leading the HR function; experience in the AE industry or other design firm with extensive interaction with creative staff would be a plus
  • Experience in every discipline within human resources as a hands-on generalist; ability to work independently to solve HR issues

  • Excellent sourcing and recruitment track record and ability to develop creative and resourceful sourcing strategies

  • Solid benefits and compensation experience; ability to design and administer programs and plans that are cost effective and highly motivational

  • Superb oral and written communication skills; a team player who demonstrates the ability to relate to employees at all levels of the company and who is extremely confidential

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask and close projects/resolve problems quickly but thoroughly

  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) at an intermediate level

  • Knowledge of HRIS systems and how to implement new HRIS solutions

  • Knowledge of federal, state (California, New York, Massachusetts) and local (San Francisco, Culver City, New York City, Cambridge) human resources laws and regulations including affirmative action, equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination/harassment guidelines
  • Ability to work under general supervision of a New York-based COO and a San Francisco-based Senior Principal (branch manager)

  • Willingness to travel to sites in Los Angeles, New York City and Boston at least once per quarter and more often if issues arise.  Willingness to travel to college campuses.
