J. DAVID GLADSTONE INSTITUTE

The J. David Gladstone Institute is a 190,000 square foot research facility with labs, offices, video conferencing and multiuse spaces. Working with the architectural firm of NBBJ San Francisco, HLB designed the interior lighting to not only meet Owner and user needs, but to enhance the building's evening identity as one of the many research landmarks in the Mission Bay Campus in San Francisco . HLB developed simple, aesthetic and practical solutions within budget and more than 5% below California 's Energy Code, Title24. To simplify maintenance, minimal lamp types were used throughout the project. Four fluorescent lamp types compose 93% of all lamps used in the laboratories, offices, conference areas and public space.

Conceptually, linear fixtures were utilized in work areas while sphere shaped fixtures were used in small meeting and collaboration areas. To meet the Owner's 80 footcandle maintained minimum light level criteria at the bench and to enhance object modeling during critical task work, HLB designed a user controlled task/ambient system using T5HO direct/indirect pendants and fluorescent task lighting. In the lobby, stone walls received patterned washes of accent lighting while wood surfaces received linear grazing washes of light. High efficacy HIR lamps and high CRI fluorescent lamps were specified. In addition, multi-lamp MR16 fixtures, on dimmers to extend lamp life, provide downlighting and focusable art lighting.

HLB received the 2005 IESNA Golden Gate Section Illumination Design Award for this project.
