Horton Lees Brogden Lighting Design worked with HLW International on creating a laid back atmosphere for Electronic Arts, a company that designs, produces, manufactures, and distributes video games. The new 210,000 square foot Los Angeles headquarters, located in Playa Vista, California, features creative office space, a testing facility and many amenities for the hard working staff.
In the reception area key architectural elements are emphasized. Strip lights placed behind the art glass create a glow at the reception desk, while illumination adjacent to the aquarium was purposefully decreased in order to highlight this element as the central focus. MR16 bullet lights in the geometric ceiling slots create playful patterns and provide warm light to compliment the wood detailing in the space. Decorative recessed downlights mark major corridors throughout the headquarters and assist with wayfinding. Low light levels were necessary for the open office area due to the extensive work done on graphic programs. To address this issue, HLB provided a general ambient light level of two foot candles with dimmable individual task lighting presenting the greatest flexibility as well as cost effectiveness and energy efficiency. The resultant design was substantially below the energy code for office buildings.
